The first in a series of new erectile dysfunction drugs will hit the market on Friday and are likely to be available soon. That’s because Levitra, the brand name for Viagra, is the latest addition to the lineup. Viagra’s patent on Levitra expired in June 2013, making Levitra a more affordable option for some men. However, there have been concerns about the effects Viagra might have on users’ sexual health.

Levitra is a medication that’s been widely used for its effect on erectile dysfunction. In fact, Levitra is the only treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for erectile dysfunction, which means that most men who take it regularly report a noticeable improvement in their sexual abilities. The drugs are also effective in treating low blood pressure.

In a blog post on Friday, Dr. Emily Tiefer, a urologist with the Northwestern Medicine Department of Medicine at Northwestern University, wrote that Levitra’s effects on blood pressure and heart rate were “rapid and consistent across various studies.”

In addition to the drugs listed above, tiefer also published a review article in the New England Journal of Medicine last October. That review found that “the effects of Levitra are not associated with changes in blood pressure.”

The review also analyzed the data from an international study that looked at the effects of Levitra on people who were taking the drug for various reasons. The researchers concluded that while “there is no evidence that Levitra can cause changes in blood pressure, it does increase the risk of hypotension and fainting.”

In its blog post, tiefer wrote that although the drugs were effective in treating mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, they were not “an effective treatment for moderate to severe erectile dysfunction” because they were not effective in treating mild to moderate high blood pressure. “While this study did provide some encouraging findings, the results were not consistent in finding side effects,” she added.

In a, the authors found that the drugs were not effective in treating heart problems. They noted that the drugs “may not offer the same benefits as Levitra, in part, because they’re not as potent as Viagra.”

In an article on Friday’s blog, tiefer noted that while the drugs were effective in treating mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, they were not “an effective treatment for moderate to severe erectile dysfunction” because they were not effective in treating mild to moderate high blood pressure. “Although they are not as effective as Viagra in treating hypertension and stroke, their use in treating erectile dysfunction is still considered to be under investigation,” she added.

In the meantime, tiefer and her team plan to continue to work with the FDA to continue to make Levitra available as a generic drug and in a more affordable generic form. They also are trying to identify the best options for men who need it to have a satisfying sex life.
